Start from where you are right now, it’s the best place to begin.
One of my favourite books is Oh The Places You’ll Go by Dr. Seuss. Just the introduction is so inspirational:
“Congratulations today’s your day
you’re off to great places
you’re off and away
you have brains in your head
you have feet in your shoes
you can steer yourself in any direction you choose”
For me that’s such a profound start in a message that I have needed to hear many times over and occasionally, I still need to remind myself of those words.
This book’s message particularly impacted my life after I graduated from University. I went to a prestigious business school and after graduating, I had great difficulty finding my first real job. There was one job in particular that I applied for which seemed to be my dream job. After going through a series of interviews, I was devastated at not getting the position.
I just felt so disillusioned as I wasn’t moving forward. I had just completed this great business degree and couldn’t figure out what I was going to do next. I just felt judged by society and I’m sure that’s something that many of you might understand and have experienced in some other shape or form.
This is also a feeling that I think a lot of people have about their money issues.
I’ve had clients and people reach out to me and tell me how embarrassed they felt at being in a bad or difficult financial situation. They also felt that society was judging them for their inability to improve their situations. They felt badly for reasons like the debt that they had accumulated, the inadequate salary that they were earning or the fact that they had no savings for the future.
I think society can be really hard on us!
Just like my life did not seem to be panning out the way I wanted it to, dealing with my first job or even in my personal life later on, as I had originally planned, so do many people have disappointments in the way things turn out for them financially. We often wonder, how did we end up with all this debt or how did we end up with this crazy situation where we’re living pay check to pay check without any way to get out of it?
But I’m here to tell you that there are ways to improve your situation. We need to put all those negative thoughts aside. Cast yourself free of all so-called societal judgments and just like my favourite book says:
“today’s your day
you’re off to great places
you’re off and away
you have brains in your head
you have feet in your shoes
you can steer yourself in any direction you choose”
Make this a new day, just like I have and continue to do. We need to choose happiness! We need to choose ourselves! We need to choose to start where we are and commit to taking one small positive step forward at a time. We need to be proud of ourselves and our new efforts to improve our situations, whatever it might be.
We can do it, both you and me!
