It is actually really simple and easy to deposit cheques from your smart-phone.
I’m a little embarrassed to say that I’ve just discovered this functionality, but there is no time like the present. I’ve know about this for a long time, but don’t get cheques too often.
You may not get cheques very often but if your distant relative sends you a cheque, you can deposit it in your account through your phone with just a few clicks. Most big banks actually have the functionality inside their mobile app. It’s a great way to save a little time.
The steps to deposit a cheque on your phone are pretty simple:
- Log into your bank account app on your phone
- Select the option to deposit your cheque
- Take a picture of the front of the cheque
- Flip it over and take a picture of the back of the cheque
- Enter the amount you’re depositing
- Select the account you want the funds to be deposited in
Voila the money will be deposited right into your account!
It’s a good idea to write the deposit date on the back of the cheque and make a note that it has been deposited. Having such busy lives, a reminder that the cheque was already deposited will be pretty helpful.
Each bank has a slightly different expectation as to how long you should keep the actual cheque. Usually it’s approximately 14 days.
One word of caution is to check the currency. If the cheque is in a different currency rather than the local currency, you do still have to go into the branch to make sure that you get the best conversion rate.
So here’s my challenge to you: if you have never deposited a cheque on your phone before, I highly recommend that the next time you get a cheque, try to do the deposit the quick and easy way.
Seriously who wants to spend time parking or going into the bank or waiting in line when you can just make the deposit on your phone? I could certainly use some time back and I’m betting you could too!
